Announcing Electric Sheep

A cloud-based AI platform for VFX

Welcome to The Spatial POV, a brief review of industry insights and news from Spatial Capital.

PORTFOLIO NEWS 🚀

We’re excited to announce our latest portfolio company. Electric Sheep is a cloud and AI-based platform to accelerate the $10B visual effects (VFX) industry.

Electric Sheep Spotlight: AI-based cloud rotoscoping tool

The Vision

Electric Sheep uses AI and distributed GPU-compute to tackle challenging graphics problems in a scalable fashion. By leveraging cloud-based GPUs, both in-house and remote working artists are freed from the limitations of desktop hardware.

Electric Sheep’s decision to go cloud-native aligns with MovieLab, a non-profit joint venture research lab composed of major Hollywood studios (Sony, Paramount, Universal, and Disney). Movie Labs advocates a fully cloud-based strategy in its 2030 Vision.

The Product

Electric Sheep’s first product is Spotlight, a cloud and AI-based rotoscoping tool. Rotoscoping is the process of tracing around objects (unwanted backgrounds, a light stand, a stunt wire harness, etc.) on a frame-by-frame basis to remove these objects from film footage. It’s one of the first tasks in VFX, and also one of the most tedious and time-consuming processes. Electric Sheep will help remove some of this burden, adding time for creative work and making visual effects more accessible to the Broadcast and Creator industries.

Electric Sheep’s cutting-edge cloud and AI platform is poised to revolutionise several core VFX workflows. They’re taking a smart and pragmatic approach to accelerate some of the most tedious post-production tasks.

The Team

The founders have grit and determination. After years of film production tool development, they moved from London to Bulgaria to run Lean while starting up. They’re now back in London for the next chapter of the company.
